Morning-after pill
The morning-after pill, also known as the emergency hormonal contraceptive pill, can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible after intercourse.
Emergency Contraceptive Options
In the UK, there are two types of emergency hormonal contraceptive (EHC) pills available without a prescription and both are available as a single dose tablet.
- Levonorgestrel 1.5mg (commonly known as Levonelle One-Step) – Must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex to be effective.
- Ulipristal acetate 30mg (commonly known as ellaOne) – Can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
Accessing the Morning-After Pill
Our pharmacist will advise you on which emergency contraceptive pill is most suitable for you during a short, confidential consultation. Please note that the morning-after pill is intended for occasional emergency use only, and should not be used as a regular method of contraception. You will have short consultation with the Pharmacist in a private consultation room. If the treatment is suitable, the pill will be supplied. If not, the pharmacist will advise you on the most appropriate next steps or refer you to another service.
